Planning Out The 2024 Draft For The New Orleans Pelicans

June 17th, 2024

by Alan Lu

The New Orleans Pelicans had an okay season, as Zion Williamson had a mostly healthy season, and he teamed up with Brandon Ingram and their head coach Willie Green to win games in the play-in tournament to make it as the eighth seed in the playoffs before losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder this year.

Also, Herb Jones made All-Defensive First Team, and they also had fairly solid seasons from other various role players such as CJ McCollum, Jonas Valanciunas, Dyson Daniels, Trey Murphy III, and Jose Alvarado. Williamson ended up getting hurt in the playoffs though, which prevented him from being a major factor against Oklahoma City, but overall, this season could be considered to be a relatively successful one for New Orleans this year.

The Pelicans in the meantime, could use a facilitator that can initiate the offense, as well as a mobile stretch big if there is one.

Anyways, here is what I did for the Pelicans in the ESPN’s 2024 NBA Mock Draft Simulator.

At 21, with Jonas Valanciunas being a free agent, they could use a young center or big man to replace him, and Ware could fill a rim protector role that also could provide a stretch component. Filipowski would be a different style of big man, but he would be a versatile offensive player that would play an extra layer of ball movement that could allow guys like Herb Jones, Zion, and CJ McCollum to work off cuts, dribble handoffs, and could unlock another dimension to their offense. Baylor Scheierman is a tall, ball handling guard that can shoot and pass, and could play and fit into any role on offense, and also could play alongside CJ McCollum to allow him to be more aggressive and play more to his scoring instincts. The 2024 NBA Draft will be held on June 26 and 27. Thanks for reading.
