Planning Out The 2024 Draft For The Los Angeles Lakers

June 16th, 2024

by Alan Lu

After the Lakers surprisingly reached the Conference Finals last year under then rookie head coach Darvin Ham, the Lakers had a fairly tumultuous season that seemingly snowballed after they won the In-Season Tournament. Though the Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and won 47 games in the regular season, and they ended up losing to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Also, they didn’t give Ham another chance for next season, as they ended up firing him after what they deemed a relatively disappointing season. Dan Hurley was offered a sizable paycheck but turned down the Lakers, and the Lakers could turn to either J.J. Redick, James Borrego, Kenny Atkinson, Sam Cassell, Ron Adams, or somebody else to be their head coach next season.

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to LeBron James to help lead their team next season, but he has a player option that will allow him to decide if he will want to come back or not, or to test free agency.

For the Lakers, they need 3 and D role players that can ably step in and play alongside James and Davis. For years after their 2020 championship win, they’ve strayed away from getting those types of players, and it’s hurt them ever since. The Lakers have gotten more limited players, so they have not been able to match up in the playoffs.

Here is what I did for the Lakers in the ESPN’s 2024 NBA Mock Draft Simulator.

Tristan Da Silva is a tall, skilled forward that would project well into a 3 and D role, and he has the skills that could allow him to be a versatile role player in this league. Also, Justin Edwards and Cam Christie are athletic swingmen that also would project well into a 3 and D role, and may also have the upside to add to that over time. At 17 and 55, I think those would be solid picks at those spots, and there are also other solid options that would be available for the Lakers as well.

Also, if you are a Los Angeles Lakers fan, then this video below is a must watch, because JJ Redick on his podcast, Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick did a great job of breaking down play actions, and it shows that he could be a great coach in the NBA.

Los Angeles Lakers’ fans! This is video is a must watch, because you guys need a head coach!

Mind the Game with LeBron James and JJ Redick is something that basketball fans should listen to if they have some free time to spare. It’s fun, informative, and entertaining, and James and Redick go into great detail to share their basketball knowledge to the viewers back at home.

Anyways, the 2024 NBA Draft will be held on June 26 and 27. Thanks for reading.
