Birthdate: 11/5/2003
2023 Top 100 Prospect Rank: 59
Projected Draft Range: 2nd Round to Undrafted
Pros:
Excels at scoring on off-ball motion plays
Decent playmaker
Decent rebounder for his size
Adequate defender
Very good athlete
Cons:
Needs to improve his shooting
Lacks an elite first step off the dribble
Unselfish to a fault
Can be too passive on offense
Can have lapses defensively
Summary:
Julian Phillips is a very athletic, energetic swingman that excels at making hustle plays to help his team on both ends of the floor. Initially thought to be of the 3 and D mold as a prospect for the NBA, Phillips seems to be much more of a prospect that may project into a defensive specialist role than as a 3 and D player at the NBA level.
He played fairly well at the 2022 McDonald’s All-American game. He really struggled with his jump shot this past season at Tennessee and was too passive at times on offense, but he’s a high-flyer that has drawn free throws at a tremendous rate. Currently, he projects to be a second round prospect for the 2023 draft.
