Yesterday, I took the time to watch JT Toppin and Texas Tech square off against Wake Forest in a BaHa Mar Championship game. It was a close, back and forth game in which numerous players played well, but Texas Tech was able to hold on due to the strong play of JT Toppin and Christian Anderson, as well as the superb second half performance of Jaylen Petty to get the win. Here are my thoughts on how Toppin and other various prospects fared, as well as how their games may currently stack up as prospects for the NBA.

JT Toppin had a solid showing to lead his team to a close win over Wake Forest. Toppin was quite effective as a scorer, passer, and rebounder, and his post presence was key to helping his team get the victory.
Toppin showed a fairly solid ability to score out of the post. He showed off a solid blend of strength, footwork, and scoring touch to score down low, and he also excelled at scoring on hustle plays. He showed that he can capably score off the dribble. Plus, Toppin was able to showcase his athleticism and motor, and he was able to throw down a thunderous dunk in transition. However, he missed all of his three-pointers that he took from beyond the arc.
He also displayed solid playmaking skills. Toppin is a very good passer out of the post, and he also made patient passes off the dribble to set up numerous scores for his teammates. However, sometimes he would struggle to handle the ball when pressured, which led to some turnovers. Toppin also rebounded the ball very well. He also was active defensively. However, sometimes he would commit fouls due to over-aggressiveness.
In general, JT Toppin played very well in his team’s win over Wake Forest, and his team will play against Purdue soon. He is an athletic, high-motor forward that excelled at making plays on both ends of the floor. He will need to improve his outside shot, but his strong production and solid feel for the game could enable him to be a solid role player in the NBA.
Juke Harris played very well in his team’s tough loss to Texas Tech. He is an athletic, skilled forward that really excelled as a shooter and scorer to help his team on offense. Harris showed a knack for scoring on strong drives to the hoop, as he has a crafty pump fake, and he has a good blend of having the strength, first step, footwork, and scoring touch to consistently get to the rim and score the basketball. He also excelled at making spot-up threes off the catch. Plus, he would also throw down powerful dunks on movement plays.
He also showcased satisfactory playmaking skills. He was able to find the open man to boring a pair of assists. On one play though, he drove to the hoop and attempted a spin move but had the ball ripped away from him to commit a turnover.
Harris did a great job of rebounding the basketball. He also played satisfactory defense. He was able to poke a ball away to get a steal, and he showed good hands defensively. On the other hand, he also was called for a blocking foul when defending off the dribble once.
In summary, Juke Harris put forth a strong performance in his team’s loss to Texas Tech. He had a very good all-around game, and he is a skilled, versatile forward that could end up being a solid role player in the NBA.
Myles Colvin also played very well, and he had a terrific first half in his team’s loss to Texas Tech. He is a very athletic guard that excelled at making plays on both ends of the floor, and he was especially effective as a shooter and scorer in this game.
Colvin showed a knack for scoring on speedy drives and curl cuts, and he would elevate throw down thunderous dunks. He also would frequently draw fouls upon opposing defenders to often get to the free throw line. He also managed to score on a strong put back in traffic to show his ability to make high-motor plays on the move.
He also shot the ball well, as he was able to make a couple of spot-up threes off the catch, and he ran quickly off the ball to make a corner three once. In the downside, he struggled more to score on dribble, mid-range jumpers.
He also showed a solid ability to rebound the basketball. Colvin also played satisfactory defense. He would jump passes and get his hands on balls to get steals due to possessing good athleticism, timing, and instincts. Sometimes though, he would commit reach-in fouls due to over-aggressiveness.
Overall, Colvin had a strong showing in this game, and he is a very athletic, skilled scoring guard that can make plays on both ends of the floor. He’ll need to be a more consistent shooter on the floor, but he is a talented prospect that could end up being an effective role player at the NBA level.
Christian Anderson also played very well to help lead his team to a win over Wake Forest. He is an agile, skilled playmaker that excelled as a shooter and passer, and he made clutch, timely shots in the second half, and he also made crisp passes to often set up scores for his teammates. He was a bit turnover prone in the first half, but he quietly had a terrific second half due to possessing a high basketball IQ and the skills to consistently make plays down the stretch. Overall, Anderson had a very good showing in this game, and he could end up being an effective role player in the NBA.
Jaylen Petty played very well, especially in the second half to help Texas Tech get the win in this game. He excelled as a shooter, scorer, and defender. He was able to make threes both off the catch and dribble, and he also made some solid defensive plays down the stretch. Petty is a sharpshooter that could be a prospect to keep an eye on for the future.
Donovan Atwell had a decent showing in Texas Tech’s win over Wake Forest. Atwell is a skilled guard that really excelled as a spot-up shooter on offense, and he would often make smooth threes to space the floor on offense. However, he was also very foul prone, as he would struggle to defend quicker players and commit fouls, which led him to miss most of the second half. Overall, Atwell is a sharpshooter that helped his team on offense, especially in the first half. He will need to improve his defense, but his offensive skills and jump shot could enable him to make his way to the NBA someday.
LeJuan Watts is a 6-6 point forward that didn’t have his best performance, but he is a good playmaker that excelled at making smart reads and passes to rack up assists for his team. While he didn’t shoot well, he was able to score on a strong, running layup out of the post while getting fouled. He also rebounded the ball well. Overall, Watts is a strong, mobile playmaker whose ability to make reads and plays on offense could enable him to compete for a roster spot in the NBA in the future, and he could at least carve out a very good career in professional basketball.
Luke Bamgboye is a very athletic big man that played well off the bench to help Texas Tech get the win. He excelled at scoring on hustle plays, and he also caught an alley-oop off of a roll to score on a high-flying dunk. Plus, he was very effective as a rebounder and interior defender, and he was able to block a shot off the dribble. Overall, Bamgboye played very well in limited minutes, and he could project to be a solid, rotational big man at the NBA level.
Cooper Schwieger is a 6-10 big man that played well off the bench for Wake Forest in his team’s loss to Texas Tech. He is an athletic big man that excelled at scoring on strong dunks off the dribble. He also managed to score on a tip-in. Plus, he also did a good job of passing the ball and setting screens for his teammates. He was still too passive on offense down the stretch, but he was able to make his presence felt when he would assert himself.
He also played decent defense in this game. He did a good job of blocking shots and getting his hands on balls, but sometimes he would struggle to defend quicker opponents, which would lead him to commit touch fouls. Overall, Schwieger is an athletic, skilled big man that has a promising set of skills, and if he can continue to continue to improve and hone his game, he could end up making it to the NBA someday.
Tre’Von Spillers didn’t play very well in his team’s loss to Texas Tech, but he was able to catch a couple of alley-oops off of rolls to the rim to score on powerful dunks. He also blocked a three-point shot early in the game.
However, he struggled as a shooter or scorer off the dribble, and he didn’t handle the ball particularly well. He also wasn’t particularly impactful defensively, as he was quite foul prone due to over-aggressiveness. Overall, while Spillers is a very good athlete, he will need to be a more skilled basketball player to be able to improve his odds to make it to the NBA. Even if he doesn’t, he could end up having a lengthy career in professional basketball.
All in all, those are my thoughts on how JT Toppin, Juke Harris, Myles Colvin, and other various prospects fared in this game. Thanks for reading.
