The 2024-25 Dallas Mavericks’ Season Preview

September 23rd, 2024

by Alan Lu

Last season was a roaring success for the Dallas Mavericks. They had a tremendous playoff run from their superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and they also got strong production from an assortment of role players, which include Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, Derrick Jones Jr., and PJ Washington, to name a few.

The Mavericks were able to reel off an impressive array of playoff series wins last season. They were able to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round, they defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round, and they held off a feisty Minnesota Timberwolves’ team in the Western Conference Finals to make it to the 2024 NBA Finals before losing to the Boston Celtics. Head coach Jason Kidd did a great job of coaching his team last season, and they will look to build off last year’s success. Derrick Jones Jr. is now gone as he left for the Clippers, but the Mavericks were able to sign Klay Thompson, so Dallas will be right into the mix as title contenders for the 2024-25 NBA season.

Star Players:

G-F Luka Dončić and G Kyrie Irving

Luka Doncic has been a tremendous player for in the NBA for quite awhile now. He is a very skilled playmaker that can haul in triple-doubles on a consistent basis, is a really good shot-maker, and he’s been known to have MVP-caliber seasons in this league.

Kyrie Irving is a very talented player that had a very good season last year for Dallas. He’s a terrific, offensively skilled playmaker that can knock down clutch shots, and he is one of the best point guards in the NBA, and he reminded people last year why he is still one of the best players in the league.

Expected Rotation:

Klay Thompson is a sharpshooting swingman that was once at the top of his game, but the injury-prone star can still contribute to Dallas well in a complementary role for them for the upcoming season.

The Dallas Mavericks have two elite superstars in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and they have a crew of solid role players to help them for the 2024-25 NBA season. In addition, Klay Thompson will give them a movement shooter that has been known for his legendary sharpshooting prowess. Dereck Lively II really excelled as an interior player in his rookie season, and may be a rising star. PJ Washington thrives as a 3 and D combo forward in the NBA.

The Mavericks have a crew of solid bench players led by Daniel Gafford, and they also added Naji Marshall and Spencer Dinwiddie to help give their team a boost for the upcoming season.

Team Options at the End of the 2025 Season:

Here I will project the likelihood of the Dallas Mavericks to pick up and accept or decline the team options for various players at the end of the 2025 season.

Dereck Lively II – Team Option Will Likely Be Accepted (100% Certainty)
Olivier Maxence-Prosper – 50/50, Leaning Towards That It Will Be Accepted (60%-70% Certainty)

Head Coach:

The Dallas Mavericks had a terrific rebound year, as they were able to make it to the 2024 NBA Finals last season, and they are title contenders for the 2025 season.

Jason Kidd
2023-24 (DAL): 50-32, 13-9 in the playoffs
Coaching Career: 323-296, 31-33 in the NBA Playoffs

Jason Kidd did a great job of coaching his team last year, and they were able to make it all the way to the 2024 NBA Finals. The Mavericks will look to build off of their 2024 playoff success, though it will be no easy feat with all of the other top-tier teams out in the West.

Projected 2024-25 Coach Rating:

NBA Head Coach Rank: 4

Outlook:

The Dallas Mavericks have a talented team that could be capable of making a deep playoff run, but they also could easily just as well miss the playoffs, as they are one of the biggest wildcard teams in the NBA in this season.

The Dallas Mavericks have Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, and they were able to add Klay Thompson in the offseason to give themselves an even more potent attack for the upcoming season. They also have a couple of solid interior players in Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford to man the paint, and they also added Marshall and Dinwiddie to help bolster their depth.

On the other hand, the loss of Derrick Jones Jr. will sting a bit, as they lose an elite perimeter defender that was also one of the best athletes in the league. The Mavericks pack a strong punch up front, but they will need to contend with the talent and depth of teams such as Boston and Oklahoma City in order to be able to make a deep playoff run once again in 2025.

Projected 2024-25 Finish:
Expected Win-Loss Record: 52-30
Projected Regular Season Finish: 3rd in the Western Conference
Expected Playoff Finish: Projected to lose in the Western Conference Finals
Preseason NBA Power Ranking: 3

I went to Basketball-Reference and SalarySwish to look up some information for this write-up. It will be an exciting basketball season this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the in-season tournament to see how that will unfold. Anyways, that is my write-up on my preview of the 2024-25 Dallas Mavericks. Thanks for reading.
