The 2023-24 Miami Heat Season Preview

September 29th, 2023

by Alan Lu

Last year, they were able to overcome struggles in the regular season, as they went on an incredible run that stemmed from winning the play-in tournament to reaching the 2023 NBA Finals. They will look to build on that to contend for an NBA championship. They missed their window of opportunity to get Damian Lillard via trade, and they had all summer to try to get it done, but even so, they should be one of the best teams in the East this season.

Star Players:

G-F Jimmy Butler and C Bam Adebayo

Jimmy Butler is an All-Star swingman that is one of the best two-way players in the game, and he has evolved into being one of the best players in the NBA. He has been tremendous in the playoffs, and the Heat have been able to count on him to come through in big games.

Bam Adebayo is an athletic, skilled point center whose playmaking and defensive skills makes him one of the best centers in the NBA. He’s teamed up with Butler to create a formidable tandem in this league.

Additions:

G-F Josh Richardson, C Thomas Bryant, and G-F Jaime Jaquez Jr.

The Heat were able to add a slew of role players to help their team, as they were able to get a couple of wings that will likely play 3 and D roles, and they also added an offensively skilled, backup center in Bryant. All three of them could be key rotation players for the upcoming season.

Subtractions:

G Max Strus, G Gabe Vincent, G Victor Oladipo, C Omer Yurtseven, C Cody Zeller, and F Udonis Haslem

The Heat lost a slew of role players, but the biggest losses look to be Strus and Vincent. Strus is a shot maker that thrived in the 2023 playoffs, and Vincent’s scoring and defensive skills helped Miami off the bench. Oladipo has been solid when healthy, but has missed a lot of time due to injuries over the years. Losing Strus and Vincent will hurt Miami, but they also were able to add some solid role players to make back their losses.

Rookies:

G-F Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Jaime Jaquez Jr. is an athletic, high-motor forward that thrives at making hustle plays on both ends of the floor. He is a good defender that will consistently go after loose balls, and he also is a crafty post player that can make shots on the block. He will need to improve his jump shot, but he is a polished prospect that will likely be able to contribute immediately to the Heat as a rookie.

Expected Rotation:

The Heat have a solid starting unit that is led by Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo. They lost Max Strus and Gabe Vincent in free agency, but they found ways to replace supporting players through their development system, so they should be able to keep pace with the other contenders in the East.

They have some interesting pieces on their bench that they can use to give them a boost off the bench. Erik Spoelstra has been known to get great performances out of unheralded players. Though they lost some key players, they’ll be able to make it back and make up for it.

Erik Spoelstra is one of the best coaches in the game, and he’s a proven winner that has shown that he can maximize the most out of his roster, especially out of unheralded players. He’s helped the Heat get to two NBA Finals in the past five seasons, and he’s hoping to lead his team to a title in 2024.

The Miami Heat are one of the best teams in the East, and they will look to build off their formidable playoff run that was led by Jimmy Butler and head coach Erik Spoelstra. They were able to get strong play out of unexpected sources, and they are hoping that Caleb Martin can take an even bigger leap to become another star for their team. They’ll also finally get to have a healthy Tyler Herro this season, and so big things will be expected out of the Heat for the upcoming season.

Projected 2023-24 Finish:
Projected Regular Season Finish: 3rd in the Eastern Conference
Expected Playoff Finish: Projected to lose in the 2nd Round
2023-24 Preseason NBA Power Ranking: 5

I went to Basketball-Reference and No-Trade Clause to look up some information for this write-up. It will be an exciting basketball season this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the in-season tournament to see how that will unfold. Anyways, that is my write-up on my preview of the 2023-24 Miami Heat. Thanks for reading.
