Previewing The 2023-24 Los Angeles Clippers

September 20th, 2023

by Alan Lu

Last year, Leonard and George were either injured or not playing due to load management for a good portion of the season, so the Clippers often had to play underhanded in the regular season. Even so, they managed to stay competitive and they were able to land a playoff spot in the West with a healthy lineup. However, Leonard got hurt a couple of games into their first round series, and the Clippers ended up losing to the Suns in five games.

This season, they made small tweaks, as they addd Kenyon Martin Jr. and Kobe Brown to beef up their depth. Still, they will need Leonard and George to stay healthy to have a shot at winning the title this season.

The Los Angeles Clippers still have not won a title yet with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and the window for them to get one may be closing soon.

Star Players:

F Kawhi Leonard and F Paul George

When healthy, the Clippers boast having two of the best forwards in the NBA. Both are superstars and Leonard is a terrific defender, and George is a high-flyer that can score the basketball. Both will need to stay away from injuries, but the Clippers could go far in the playoffs if both can stay healthy in 2024.

Additions:

F Kenyon Martin Jr., F Kobe Brown, and F Jordan Miller

The Clippers were able to acquire Kenyon Martin Jr. in a trade, and they were able to strengthen their already deep bench by adding a very athletic, versatile forward to their team. Kobe Brown is a playmaking combo forward that can shoot and pass the basketball, and his strong showing at the 2023 Summer League in Las Vegas could enable him to get some playing time this season.

Subtractions:

G Eric Gordon

Gordon is an experienced, skilled combo guard that is a sharpshooter and is a solid defender in this league, and letting him go to another team would normally impact NBA teams negatively in a significant way. On the other hand, the Clippers have a deep and talented bench, so that can offset the loss of them losing Gordon to the Suns.

Rookies:

F Kobe Brown and F Jordan Miller

Kobe Brown is a skilled combo forward that has solid playmaking skills, and he has noticeably improved his jump shot lately. He played very well at the Summer League, and he’s a polished player that could contribute right away. Miller is an athletic, energetic swingman that could project into a 3 and D role in the NBA.

Expected Rotation:

Russell Westbrook looked to be rejuvenated after playing for the Clippers last year, and he will hope to jump start their title hopes for the new season.

The Clippers have a solid group of starters, and Leonard and George have proven to be a formidable tandem when healthy. However, they also have an injury-prone group of starters, so they will need to do what they can to get them healthy in time for the playoffs.

Key Bench Players:

The Clippers have a very solid, strong bench, and they have a stacked group of bench players that will play their roles well for the upcoming season. They also added Kenyon Martin Jr., a former starter and key role player from the Houston Rockets, and they have such depth that it is unsure if Martin or Bones Hyland will crack their rotation this year.

Head Coach:

Tyronn Lue
2022-23 (LAC): 44-38, 1-4 in the playoffs
Coaching Career: 261-186, 52-33 in the NBA Playoffs

Tyronn Lue is the head coach of the Clippers, and he is best known for helping the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers win the championship. He’s helped the Clippers get to a slew of playoff runs, but has yet to get the Clippers to the NBA Finals. He’ll need his best players to stay healthy, but his ability to coach players up could help them at least be very competitive in the playoffs.

Outlook:

The Los Angeles Clippers have been considered contenders for years, but is now their time, or has their window already closed?
(Photo: Harry How/Getty Images, via The Los Angeles Times)

The Clippers have long been viewed as potential title contenders ever since they landed Leonard and George in the offseason years ago. However, they’ve had trouble staying healthy in the years after they lost to the Denver Nuggets in the second round series of the 2020 NBA Playoffs, and the Clippers have been up and down since.

They’ll need their top players to stay healthy, and while they have enough depth to make it to the playoffs with or without them, they’ll need Leonard and George to help them make a deep playoff run. Otherwise, they could be facing at another early exit in the playoffs in 2024.

Projected 2023-24 Finish:
Projected Regular Season Finish: 8th in the Western Conference
Expected Playoff Finish: Projected to lose in the 1st Round
2023-24 Preseason NBA Power Ranking: 14

I went to Basketball-Reference and No-Trade Clause to look up some information for this write-up. It will be an exciting basketball season this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing the in-season tournament to see how that will unfold. Anyways, that is my write-up on my preview of the 2023-24 Los Angeles Clippers. Thanks for reading.
