Planning Out The 2024 Draft For The Dallas Mavericks

June 20th, 2024

The Dallas Mavericks had a very good season this year, as well as a sterling playoff run, as their superstars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were dominant for most of the postseason, and they played absolutely terrific basketball this season.

They’ve also received strong play from their role players, PJ Washington, rookie center Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, and Derrick Jones Jr., and the Mavericks have been a significantly better defensive team than last year. Credit to head coach Jason Kidd to making the necessary adjustments to get the Mavericks back to being a successful playoff basketball team, as the Mavericks were able to get to the 2024 NBA Finals after missing the postseason in 2023, as they had reached the Western Conference Finals in 2022. Though they lost to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, the Mavericks’ season was very successful overall.

As for what they could look to add to their team, the Mavericks will need to add more shooters, and they need a stretch big that can stay healthy to help add another component to their game offensively. Luka Doncic will need players that can knock down shots, so pure shooters would help them. A movement shooter also would help them if that player is available for them at the spot they’re picking in this draft.

Here is who I selected for the Mavericks in the ESPN’s 2024 NBA Mock Draft Simulator.

Cam Spencer is the agile, movement shooting combo guard that could help the Mavericks here. He moves well East to West, can run off screens and make plays off of dribble handoffs, and he would add a movement shooting component to their team. He’s a reliable shooter that can make plays off the ball or as a point guard, and he would be a very solid pick for them at 58 in this draft. Justin Edwards would be a tremendous pick for Dallas at 58, and he is a very athletic forward that would project well into a 3 and D role in the NBA, and has the upside to develop into a very versatile role player. If he were somehow available for them to select at 58 (which I don’t think he will be in the actual draft), then they should definitely select him there. Also, Malevy Leons would also be a solid, energetic 3 and D forward that would make hustle plays on both ends of the floor, and he would fit in well with Dallas’ team.

The 2024 NBA Draft will be held on June 26 and 27. Thanks for reading.
