Analyzing Andrew Rowsey, George King, and Tra Holder on Day 2 of the 2018 PIT

Yesterday, I took the time to watch K & D Rounds Landscaping play against Norfolk Sports Club in a game that was played on Day 2 of the 2018 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. Andrew Rowsey and George King turned in impressive performances, as they both scored 21 points to lead their team to a double-digit victory. Other top performers in this match were Tra Holder and Kenrich Williams, and there were others that played fairly well. For a look at the box score, click here.

Marquette’s senior point guard, Andrew Rowsey had a terrific showing to help lead K & D Rounds Landscaping to get a win in this game, as he scored 21 points, he made 4 threes, and he also collected 9 assists and 2 steals to help his team defeat the Norfolk Sports Club. Rowsey did a very good job of knocking down threes to space the floor for his team. He excelled at making long-range jumpers off the catch, as he can make corner threes, and he also can pull-up to make threes off the dribble. He also used a crafty pump fake to draw three free throws after hoisting up an outside shot from beyond the arc another time.

He also managed to score on a cut to the hoop using his left hand. Also, he used a hesitation dribble and a side step to score on a fadeaway, pull-up mid-range jumper. However, he can miss shots on drives to the hoop, as he can struggle to finish plays around the basket at times. Also, Rowsey displayed solid playmaking skills. He is a patient, unselfish player that did a good job of getting the ball to his teammates, and he would often find shooters, as he can kick it out to them to set up scores for them. He possesses good court vision, and he also can find teammates on rolls to the basket. He notched many assists in this game, and he only committed one turnover, but there was one occasion where he lost the ball on a drive in transition due to playing out of control on that possession.

Plus, he also played very good defense. Rowsey did a great job of deflected passes to help get steals and deflections, and he also poked a ball away to force a turnover. He did an outstanding job of getting deflections in this game, and his only mistake on this end was when he fouled an opponent on a pull-up, long two-point shot due to over-aggressiveness. In general, Andrew Rowsey had an excellent game, as he played well in virtually all areas to help his team get a double-digit victory. He is a smart, skilled point guard that will compete relentlessly on every possession, as he is a tough, gritty player that may have what it takes to land on an NBA roster.

Colorado’s 6-6 senior forward, George King also had a solid all-around game, and he in particular excelled as a shooter and scorer to help K & D Rounds Landscaping get a double digit win over Norfolk Sports Club. King did a very good job of knocking down jumpers to space the floor for his team. He excelled at making spot-up threes, and he also showed a knack for making pull-up, mid-range jumpers. He also used a quick pump fake to score on a tough, pull-up shot once, and he also ran off of a screen to make a mid-range jumper off the catch another time.

He also showed a good ability to get scores on drives in both the half court as well as in transition, as he has an adequate first step, combined with possessing the strength and body control to finish plays around the basket. He also passed the ball well. King is a patient player that sees the floor well, and he will make the extra pass to set up scoring chances for his teammates. He can find them on cuts and he also can kick it out to shooters off the dribble.

Also, he showed an adequate ability to rebound the basketball. He would actively crash the glass to haul in offensive boards, and he possesses good athleticism, motor, and ball location skills to do so. He also would sometimes push the ball up the floor after grabbing defensive rebounds. Plus, he also defended well. King managed to block a shot off of a drive, and he also can get his hands on passes and poke balls away to obtain steals for his team. Also, he was able to successfully challenge a three-point shot to force a miss.

In summary, George King played very well, as he made solid plays both ends of the floor to help his team get the win. He is an athletic swingman that shoots the ball well, and he also is a good defender when he is on the court. He played well in the Reese’s College All-Star game, and he also is off to a strong start in this year’s Portsmouth Invitational Tournament. He is an intriguing prospect that could excel as a two-way player in the NBA, and he could end up being a good find for a team in the second round range of the upcoming draft.

Arizona State’s 6-1 senior point guard, Tra Holder put forth a solid performance in his team’s loss to K & D Rounds Landscaping. As he played for the Norfolk Sports Club, he was incredibly efficient as a shooter and scorer when he was on the floor, and he also excelled as a playmaker. He did a very good job of knocking down jumpers to help his team on offense. He excelled at scoring on pull-up jumpers, as he showed a knack for making them from mid-range. Holder also can make threes off the catch and dribble, and he also used a nice hesitation move to score on a crafty finger roll on a quick drive to the basket another time.

He also displayed good playmaking skills. Holder can throw an assortment of passes, and he also handles the ball well. He can find teammates on rolls to the rim to set up scores for them, and he also can throw accurate lob passes. But he threw an errant pass once, and he also had a ball poked off of him when handling it to commit a couple of turnovers. Holder also defended fairly well. On one possession, he contested a three to force a miss. Overall, Tra Holder played very well, as he primarily excelled as a shooter and facilitator when he was on the floor, and he could be a player that could go late in the second round on draft day.

TCU’s 6-7 senior forward, Kenrich Williams also played well, as he nearly had a double-double for Norfolk Sports Club in his team’s loss in this game. Williams did a good job of knocking long-range jumpers, as he showed a knack for making spot-up threes off the catch. However, he struggled more to make mid-range jumpers off the dribble.

He also showed a very good ability to score on hustle plays. He would run the floor to score on alley-oop layups, and he has solid hands to catch lob passes. Also, Williams would crash the offensive glass to get rebounds, and he would help provide second chance points for his team, as he was able to score on a strong jump hook once after getting an offensive board. He also displayed good playmaking skills. Williams generally handled the ball well, and he would sometimes kick it out to shooters to set up scores for them. He also can pass out of the post in addition.

Overall, Williams had a good showing in his team’s loss in this contest, and he showed off adequate athletic abilities, combined with possessing good offensive skills and rebounding prowess when he was on the floor. Currently, he might have the most draft stock among any player that played in this game so far, and he is a tall, skilled point forward that could end up getting selected in the second round in the upcoming draft.

Rhode Island’s 6-3 senior guard, Jared Terrell excelled as a shooter and scorer for K & D Rounds Landscaping. He showed a knack for knocking down long, two-point shots, and he also would run the floor to get scores on the break. Also, he showed a decent ability to make threes, as he was able to patiently knock down a corner three once in this game.

He also is a solid athlete, as he made a good hustle play another time to score on a tip slam off of an offensive rebound. He also would make good passes, and he can find teammates ahead to set up scoring chances for them. In general, Jared Terrell did a good job of scoring the basketball, and he is an athletic, energetic combo guard that can make plays on both ends of the court. While he may still need to show teams that he can effectively run the point, Terrell is an interesting prospect that could end up being a solid addition to an NBA team’s summer league roster this year.

Western Michigan’s 6-3 senior point guard, Thomas Wilder also played fairly well, as he would make shots and get assists for the Norfolk Sports Club in his team’s loss in this game. He did a good job of scoring and drawing free throws on pull-up, mid-range jumpers, and he also showed a good ability to score on strong drives to the basket. Wilder can split a double team off the dribble, and he also can drop in a floater to get a score. But he struggled to knock down threes, as he had trouble making shots from beyond the arc.

Wilder also passed and handled the ball well. He can make an assortment of passes, as he is a quick, agile playmaker that possesses good court vision. He can throw accurate lob passes, and he can find teammates off the dribble. But he did commit one turnover, as he lost the ball on a drive out of bounds due to recklessness that time. He also exhibited adequate defensive skills, and on one play, he poked a ball away to help his team get a steal. But there was another time where he bit on a pump fake, as his opponent ended up being fouled on a three-point shot.

In summary, Thomas Wilder had a fairly good game, and he is an athletic playmaker that can make shots, get assists, and he also can provide considerable ball pressure defensively. But sometimes he can get into trouble by playing too wildly at times when he is on the floor. If he can play more under control and be more consistent at knocking down jumpers especially from beyond the arc, Wilder could increase his chances to succeed at the next level.

Georgia’s 6-8 senior forward, Yante Maten had a decent showing for the Norfolk Sports Club, as he scored the basketball in a variety of ways, generally defended well and would crash the glass, but he was also had some trouble knocking down jumpers at times. Maten did a good job of scoring in the post as well as in transition. Maten really excelled at drawing fouls upon the opposition, and he also has good strength, as he once backed his man down to score on a powerful, sweeping hook. He also runs the floor fairly well, and he also can score on drives in transition.

Plus, he also made a mid-range jumper as well as a three on pick and pop plays. However, he struggled to consistently make three-point shots, and he would sometimes miss shots in traffic. He also defended fairly well in this game. Maten managed to block a shot off of a drive, and he also contested a shot in the post to force a miss. But sometimes, he can be too aggressive on the defensive end, as there was one play where he rotated but ended up fouling an opponent on a drive to the basket.

In summary, Yante Maten played fairly well, as he possesses versatile scoring skills, he also will actively look to grab rebounds, and he will actively contest shots on the defensive end. But he also struggled with his three-point shot at times, and there were times where he did not show enough lift when he would look to score in the paint. Still, Maten has a wide array of skills, and he is a tough, skilled combo forward that could end up getting drafted in the mid to late second round range on draft day.

Purdue’s 6-4 senior guard, Dakota Mathias played well in the second half for the Norfolk Sports Club, as he did a good job of knocking threes from beyond the arc, as he can do so off the catch or dribble, and he also utilized a jab step to make a long, pull-up two-point shot. He did not otherwise stand out in the other areas, but he is a skilled basketball player that may project into a shooting specialist role in the NBA, as he could be a similar player to former Charlotte Bobcats guard, Matt Carroll.

Seton Hall’s 6-4 senior combo guard, Khadeen Carrington had some good moments for K & D Rounds Landscaping. He generally excelled as a facilitator when he was on the floor, though he would occasionally struggle to protect the ball when handling it on the offensive end. He also showed some ability to get scores on quick drives to the basket. He used a behind the back move to score off the glass once, and he also scored another time on a left handed drive by throwing down a thunderous dunk late in the game. But Carrington would sometimes struggle to finish plays in traffic, and he did not take a three in this game, as he was inconsistent in making shots.

In summary, Khadeen Carrington is an interesting prospect, as he is a athletic combo guard that can make highlight real worthy plays, and he has the ability to create his own shot to get points on offense. He was able to make some solid plays in this game, and he could end up being a good addition to an NBA team’s summer league roster this year.

Other Notes:

Early on Day 2 of the 2018 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, Portsmouth Partnership faced off against Cherry Bekaert, and though I did not see this game, it was a frenetically paced match in which both teams made an abundance of shots throughout this contest. Oakland’s 6-3 senior guard, Kendrick Nunn turned in the best game, as he scored 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting, and he made 6 threes, while collecting 4 rebounds, and 4 assists to help Portsmouth Partnership get the win over Cherry Bekaert. He had an outstanding performance on this day, as this game could boost his draft stock considerably.

Davidson’s 6-8 senior combo forward, Peyton Aldridge managed to score 23 points, as he made 4 threes, and he collected rebounds and 5 assists for Cherry Bekaert.

VCU’s 6-7 senior combo forward, Justin Tillman shot much better from the field, as he scored 25 points and notched 11 rebounds for Cherry Bekaert.

Arkansas’ 6-3 senior point guard Daryl Macon, USC’s 6-5 senior guard Elijah Stewart, and Wyoming’s 6-8 senior forward, Hayden Dalton all scored 16 points each, Macon collected 9 assists, while Stewart notched 3 blocks, and Dalton collected 7 rebounds. The trio scored a combined 48 points as they helped Portsmouth Partnership get the win.

Florida’s senior point guard, Chris Chiozza scored 8 points on 4-of-6 shooting, and he collected 10 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block to help Portsmouth Partnership get a narrow victory over Cherry Bekaert.

Kyle Washington and Brandon Goodwin both had double-doubles for Cherry Bekaert in their team’s loss, but neither player shot the ball particularly well. Marcus Foster also notched 12 points and had 6 assists for Cherry Bekaert in their loss to Portsmouth Partnership.
